Posts: 2 02/01/06 03:37:37	Tags : None Hey all, I am 3yr med student and was considering doing an away rotation at UTSW. I needed some advice from students who did aways there. I have heard a lot of great things about this program. Can you give me some feedback on this program, good/bad points? People who interviewed there, what did you think of this program? Thanks.

Posts: 1467 02/02/06 02:39:41	Excellent prog. Pros: Good experience with the privates, Parkland, VA and Childrens. Active research. Congenial residents and faculty (everyone but some of the older guys, ie snodgrass and the older onc folks, are on a first name basis). Cons: top heavy- still doing a lot of clinic time in 3rd year and operating infrequently- chiefs operate 24/7. Dallas is a plus/minus for some- nice town, definitely not the east coast. Forgot how long it is...maybe a six? Either ways, one of the top programs out there. If it was in Chicago, it'd be a top 5.

Posts: 1467 02/02/06 16:22:05	UTSW is an awesome program. They very well respected and have a great history. Pros -They do a great job of placing their residents in fellowships, but are not over the top on their residents doing academics. There are some that go into private practice every year. They have huge surgical volume with lots of autonomy at Parkland and the VA. There are endless research opportunities along with 6 months of research time as a U2 in only a 5-year program. The only thing chiefs do is operate. It is somewhat top heavy, but there is enough to go around for everyone. Cons The VA is rather far away from the other 3 hospitals. There is a lot of clinic as a U1 (could be a pro b/c you develop great cysto and PNBx skills), Dallas is extremely hot in the summer
