I would not recommend applying to more than 2 specialties. For family or peds, I would only apply to a few places and go on 5 interviews max because those are less competitive fields. Also, I would not apply to more than one specialty at your home program because word will get around and both the residents and attending faculty will question your dedication to [insert field]. Moreover, I would preferrably not go to interviews for more than one specialty at the same program/school unless you can schedule the back-up interview after the urology match day. Also, I would plan on doing all of your back-up interviews in January and February. I am currently a urology resident and applied to a back-up specialty. Good luck. |

Urology, peds, FM? Those are very different residencies. Where is general surgery on that list?

On second thought, you should apply to your home program back-up specialty because you're going to need a letter from the chair. Just be discreet about
it. Don't tell your classmates, etc. Do your AI's early and consider doing only one away rotation in urology. It's a lot of work and stressful,
but ultimately it puts you in the driver's seat so you don't have to scramble if you don't match in urology. I think you're being smart.
