5 year program (1+4) that takes 2 residents per year. General surgery year includes 2-3 months of Urology, and the rest of the general rotations are tough, but not malignant. You will work at 3 Hospitals - LSU (large population from Northern Louisiana/East TX/ SW Ark), the Shreveport VA, and Willis-Knighton, a nice private hospital.
You do 6 months at the VA as a Uro 2 and 6 as a chief (1 year total). They have clinic at the VA about 3 times a week and the rest of the time you are operating. They recently lost their VA faculty, who was awesome, but are actively looking for a replacement. You get a lot of open stuff, stones/TURBT's, and some Lap experience. I believe they do 6 months at the private hospital as a Uro-1 and 3 (again, 1 year total), doing peds as uro 1 and more advanced adult cases as a uro 3.
At the main hospital, LSU, they have clinic daily, which all residents participate in if not in the OR. The chief basically runs the clinic when there, but is in the OR a majority of the time. The clinic is busy, but you have a lot of help. They have a great variety of cases in the OR, and you are active as a Uro 2 (not too top heavy), but I'm not sure about percentiles.
All the faculty are very approachable, love to teach, and all knowledgeable in their respective fields. You get great exposure to the bread and butter stuff, good female exposure, solid peds experience, and you will see crazy amount of oncology at the VA and LSU. Dr Venable, the chair, also takes pride in his inservice exams scores, and their grades show. The didactic sessions are good, but not too long/boring, and are taught by faculty. All conferences were non-threatening.
Their residents are all down to earth and fun to work with. They don't seem overworked...I'd say average 70 hrs/week, most are married. I rotated at three different programs this year, and thought they were the most educated Uro residents I had been around. They knew their crap.
Shreveport is Shreveport. Has its crime like most southern cities, but nothing rediculous. Housing very affordable, nice 3 Br houses go for 140's and up. Some outdoors things to do, fishing, hunting, golf...but no mountains. The winters are mild, summers scorchingly hot.
Negatives - Shreveport might not be the most cultural city in the south. Little Lap and fertility experience, and clinic is run everyday at the main hospital. The residents aren't in clinic if they have an OR case though.
